The Calls of the Shofar

TE'KI'AH - The Tekiah represents a clear, continuous, and resolute tone without pauses or breaks.

• Hebrew Root: Tekiah comes from the verb root t-k-v or t-q-a (תק״ע), which means "to blow/sound an instrument," "to thrust or drive in," or "to fix and plant"

This is a long clear blast with one note (3-5 seconds) and there is often a rise at the end of the note. This call represents Praise/Worship. It brings everyone to attention. It is a call to worship the King. To declare God’s sovereignty and Messiah’s Kingship. Expresses “The King Is Coming” It can represent a spiritual awakening, sobering, an alertness. The Tekiah is also often done as a “bookmark” between each call symbolizing constancy and steadfastness

Notes for believers in Jesus/Yeshua as Messiah-Tekiah is a Call to Awakening and Repentance:

• Spiritual Awakening: Much like the ancient call to wake up from spiritual slumber (Joel 2:1)

• Reminder of Grace: For Christians, the crafting of the shofar from a ram's horn recalls the ram caught in the thicket for Abraham—and ultimately points to Jesus as the ultimate Lamb/Ram of God whose sacrifice provides redemption and cleanses sin

SH’VA'RIM - The Shevarim is composed of three medium-length, connected notes or sighs.

• Hebrew Root: Shevarim (pronounced shih-vah-REEM) is a Hebrew word meaning “breaks” or “fractures”

This has three medium length blasts, two tones each & represents Brokenness of man and our need for Redemption. Some scholars speak of Shevarim as the tears of sadness or joy. There is a sense of longing & reflection. More symbology includes:

• A Human Sigh: The three notes mimic a deep, broken sigh, groaning, or weeping from a troubled heart

• Introspection and Renewal: Rooted in the Hebrew word shever (break or crisis), it calls the listener to self-evaluation, repentance, and acknowledging life's brokenness.

• Birth Pangs: Some teachings also link shever to the seat of labor, viewing the sigh as a passage toward spiritual rebirth and renewal.

Note for believers in Jesus/Yeshua as Messiah-Sh’va’rim is a call of longing for God, a eternal gratefulness for what Jesus/Yeshua has done for each of us:

• Repent and Turn To God: The shofar urges believers to examine their hearts, repent, and draw close to God. While Jesus has died for our sins and saved us we must also turn our hearts toward God, repent, and draw close to Him.

  
  TE'RU'AH - This has nine or more short/rapid staccato blasts and represents Warfare & Victory. The short notes are similar to a person crying. This call is a call of Spiritual warfare. Sounding the Alarm. Expressing distress, urgency, spiritual action. It is disruptive to the enemies of God.

• Hebrew Root: Teruah means a loud noise, a shout, an alarm, a blast from a horn or shofar

• Shout or Cry: It comes from the Hebrew root r.v.a. (ר.ו.ע), meaning to make a noise, shout, or cry out. It can describe a massive vocal shout from a crowd of people (such as the battle cry at Jericho) or a wailing, sobbing cry.

• Horn Blast: It refers to a piercing, staccato blast blown on a shofar (ram's horn) or trumpet. In Jewish tradition, the teruah is specifically a series of at least nine short, staccato staccato/straining blasts.

  Note for believers in Jesus/Yeshua as Messiah-Te’ru’ah Breaks the power of the enemy:

• Breaking Strongholds: The shofar echoes the fall of the walls of Jericho (Joshua 6) representing God's power to tear down spiritual obstacles, bondages, and enemy strongholds through faith rather than human might

• Shout of Triumph: It acts as a sonic representation of God’s victory (נִצָּחוֹן) over the powers of sin, darkness, and death accomplished through the cross and resurrection of Jesus

  
  TE'KI'AH GE'DO'LAH- This is an extra long single blast.  It is the jubilee note extended as long as one can … and represents the great last trumpet sound when the Yeshua returns as King when we who are saved receive new bodies and we are all healed. Also used to call upon G-d. Giving thanks for his Mercy /Goodness/Redemption. It is a call of Redemption. Expressing Hope and the Transcendence of God.

• Hebrew Root: Tekiah (תְּקִיעָה): Derived from the Hebrew root meaning to blow or drive in; it refers to a single, long, steady, unbroken blast of the shofar (ram's horn).

• Hebrew Root: Gedolah (הַגְּדוֹלָה): The feminine singular adjective meaning "great," "large," or "extended"

Note for believers in Jesus/Yeshua as Messiah-Te’ki’ah Ge’do’lah represents the proclamation of the King and the anticipation of the return of Jesus Christ Messiah:

• Coronation & Lordship: In biblical history, trumpets and shofars announced the crowning and rule of a king. For believers, it proclaims Jesus as the reigning King of kings and Lord of lords

• Worship: It is used in praise and celebratory worship (reminiscent of the Ark of the Covenant being brought to Jerusalem in 2 Samuel 6:15, expressing joy in God's presence

• The Last Trumpet: New Testament Scripture explicitly links the shofar to the end of the age. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 and 1 Corinthians 15:52 that the Lord will descend from heaven with a cry of command, the voice of an archangel, and "the trumpet of God" (the last shofar)

• The Gathering of Believers: The sound reminds Christians of the future day when Jesus will gather His people together and establish His eternal Kingdom (Matthew 24:31 and Revelation 11:15)
